We were given our project description: Project Description: (more details will be given in the first requirements meeting)

We are tasked with creating a Local Community Impact Portal. This portal will be a platform for residents and businesses to log issues or suggest improvements related to companies with significant local impacts. It will centralize community feedback, allowing users to report concerns like environmental issues or traffic disruptions and propose enhancements. The portal will include reporting mechanisms for companies to update the community on their responses, allowing for transparency and trust.

We were also given a list of technical challenges:

  • The first challenge is to build the portal with the least environmental impact as possible using Green software principles. There should be visibility of the carbon footprint of the portal itself.
  • The second challenge is to utilize Gen AI to create new kinds of customer engagement as opposed to traditional designs. This includes the ability guide customers on the various processes, finding information, FAQs etc through intelligent virtual agents.

Based on this, we did some research into existing projects that are similar to this:

  • FixMyStreet: FixMyStreet is a platform that enables citizens to report public issues, such as potholes, graffiti, or broken streetlights, to local authorities. It streamlines the reporting process by providing a user-friendly interface for submitting issues and a tracking system for monitoring their resolution
  • Nextdoor: Nextdoor is a private social network for neighborhoods that allows residents to connect with one another, share information, and discuss local issues. It provides a platform for community members to communicate, organize events, and collaborate on neighborhood initiatives.
  • Reddit: Reddit is a social news aggregation and discussion platform where users can post content, vote on submissions, and engage in conversations. It features a wide range of communities, or subreddits, dedicated to specific topics, interests, or locations.
